Day trip to Frigiliana from Nerja

 ### The white character of Frigiliana The bus from Nerja to Frigiliana leaves regularly from the bus station on Avenida Pescia. It's a short ride up into the hills, but the landscape quickly changes from a coastal town to a mountainscape. The bus drops you off in the new part of Frigiliana, from where it's a short walk to the old Moorish quarter. When you walk into Frigiliana's old quarter, you immediately notice the difference from Nerja. The houses are whiter, the streets narrower and steeper. Everywhere you see pots with flowering plants and traditional Moorish mosaics adorning the facades. The influence of Moorish history is still strongly felt here, which gives the village a unique character compared to other white villages in Andalusia. You can easily wander through the winding streets for an hour or two. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for a drink and take in the surroundings. Take your time walking up, the views over the valley and the Mediterranean get better the higher you go. Even on a Saturday, when I walk from home to the market on Calle Antonio Ferrandis, I think of these vistas. From the Moorish quarter you can also see the road back to Nerja. It's a day trip that feels like a step back in time, away from the hustle and bustle of the coast. For the return journey, you can take the same bus as on the way there, from the bus station in the new part of Frigiliana. The buses run until the evening, so you've got plenty of time to explore the village. Once back in Nerja, I have my well-deserved café con leche. ### A walk through the old Moorish quarter I often grab the bus from Nerja for a day trip to Frigiliana, which is a great way to explore the Sierra de Almijara. Once I arrive in the village, my walk usually starts at the top of the village gate, which is actually more of a passage to the older part of the village. This part is immediately characterised by its steep streets and white houses. From there, you follow the narrow, winding streets upwards. They're lovely paths just to wander and continually discover a new peek-through. I come here often, and yet every time I feel like there's something new to see; it remains a photogenic area. The highest point of the village, the spot where the castle once stood, offers a wide view. Here, you don't just see the village itself, but also the surroundings with the green rolling hills. These hills eventually lead to the coastline. The walk passes several plaques that tell stories about Frigiliana's Moorish history. These tiles, often in a blue and white colour scheme, tell bits of the past, which gives the walk an extra dimension. It's a nice way to imagine what life was like here centuries ago. I've always been more into tennis myself, which doesn't quite fit with the history here. Along the way, you'll stumble upon several spots perfect for a short break. There are various viewpoints and small squares where you can sit for a bit and let the surroundings sink in. The route isn't long, but due to the steep climbs and descents, it's definitely an activity you should do at your leisure. ### Lunch at local tapas bars in Frigiliana After a walk through Frigiliana, I look for a place for lunch. That's usually a good indicator for fresh produce and authentic flavours. In Frigiliana, lunch often means enjoying small dishes that you share. Ask for the *raciones* of the day, they're often fresher. Sometimes there's a special local variation. A tip is to see what others are ordering and point to it if language is a barrier. That often works best. There are various tapas bars in Frigiliana that have their own specialities. Since I don't have a car and travel by bus, I always stay in the centre of the village. The bars on the main street or around the squares are easy to reach and often offer a good selection. Ask about options with local ingredients. For lunch, I like to try *berenjenas con miel*, fried aubergine with honey, a classic in Andalusia. Also highly recommended in Frigiliana is *choto al ajillo*, kid goat with garlic. This dish isn't on every menu, but if it is, it's worth trying. If you don't eat meat, there are often options like *pimientos de Padrón*, small green peppers, or a salad made with local produce. It's a matter of looking around and asking what's available. The bars with a terrace often offer a pleasant place to pause and soak up the village atmosphere. ### Arriving and parking in Frigiliana from Nerja  From Nerja, there are two main options to get to Frigiliana: by car or by bus. Without a car of my own, like me, the bus connection is the most logical choice. The bus is a simple and direct way to reach the village and avoids the hassle of finding a parking spot. The bus ride also offers a preview of the landscape around Frigiliana. For those travelling by car, it's good to keep in mind the nature of Frigiliana. The village is built on a slope with narrow, steep streets, which makes exploring on foot the best way. Parking can be a challenge, especially in high season. There's parking available on the outskirts of the village, usually along the main road leading up. A good option is to park in one of the designated car parks at the bottom of the historic centre. From there, it's an uphill walk, with the stairs and sloping paths that characterise Frigiliana. Although parking spaces are often full, it's worth driving on until you find a spot outside the most central and busy streets. Due to its steep location and many stairs, the village isn't suitable for everyone. People with reduced mobility or walking difficulties might struggle with the steep paths and uneven paving. There are some flat sections, but Frigiliana's charm lies precisely in its maze of ascending streets. It's smart to wear comfortable shoes. The bus from Nerja stops down in Frigiliana. From the bus stop, you walk directly into the village. The main street leading uphill takes you past most of the sights and small shops. It's a compact village, so despite the elevation changes, everything is quite walkable if you're fit enough. ### The best time to visit Frigiliana  A day trip to Frigiliana from Nerja can be done all year round, but spring, and especially May, offers the most ideal conditions. Temperatures are pleasantly mild then, perfect for exploring the narrow streets without the scorching summer heat. The nature around the village is in bloom, which adds an extra dimension to the views. The choice between a morning or afternoon visit depends on your preferences. An early start in the morning has the advantage of peace and coolness in the steep streets. You can then explore the Moorish quarter in all tranquillity and take photos without the crowds, which is definitely something to consider given the village's popularity. The morning sun casts a soft light on the white houses. An afternoon visit also offers advantages, especially if you want to experience the bustle of the early afternoon meal. Although it can be warmer and busier then, the tapas bars and restaurants really come alive. The village centre is then buzzing with activity, and that can be a very charming experience too. Do keep in mind that some places might be full then. The afternoons in Frigiliana, especially in spring, are excellent for relaxing moments on a terrace. You can end the day with a refreshing drink as the sun slowly sets, which then gives beautiful hues above the valley. Remember that the buses back to Nerja have their own timetable, and check it to get back if you want to catch the last bus. My own mornings in Nerja usually start with a café con leche in the centre. After that, I often take the bus to Frigiliana. I'm then well in time to explore the village before the big crowds arrive. Then I've got the opportunity to peacefully wander through the streets and enjoy the atmosphere without rushing. After exploring the village, I usually return to Nerja in the late afternoon. This gives me plenty of time to have lunch in Frigiliana and look around some more. Then I can still enjoy the evening light in Nerja. It's a nice way to end the day, and that way you make the most of the daylight and cooler hours, both in the village and during the return journey. ### Frigiliana's hidden viewpoint  What many day-trippers miss in Frigiliana is the viewpoint that offers a wide view over the village and the surroundings. This spot is excellent for photos without the crowds of the Balcón de Europa in Nerja, but with a similarly panoramic effect. It gives a unique perspective on the village's architecture. From the main square in Frigiliana, you follow the signs to the higher parts of the old Morisco quarter. The route is a climb, but the narrow, winding streets are easily walkable. Along the way, you'll pass various viewpoints that already give you a taste of the main attraction. Once at the top of the 'altozano', an open space that's often overlooked reveals itself. Here, at the edge of the buildings, you look far out over the valley. It's a quieter alternative to the busier spots in Frigiliana's centre. Maria showed me this place years ago. She knew this was the best spot to just breathe and take in the landscape, away from the tourist flow. It's a moment of serene peace that completes your day out in Frigiliana. Worth it. Just do it.
